We're not "always willing to help" if we get asked the same questions over and over again.

Erasing your long term memory helps in readily answering the same questions over and over again without any frustration whatsoever. I suggest getting hit in the head by a golden brick for optimal results in that matter. biggrin.gif

Don't go around yawning and snapping and yelling.
You are supposed to offer help.
If you can't use the search yourself to fetch them the knowledge, don't bother to reply.
This isn't trash talk, this is server help.

No, we're not "supposed" to, we are allowed to offer help.

Also, from the "General Questions rules"-thread:
Mine GO BOOM wrote:
Search the board before you post a question. It is most likely that someone has asked the same thing you want to know, so you can save yourself time for waiting for an answer, and you can save others time for them to retype an answer they already said before. On each forum is a little search box that you can use for a quick search in that forum. It will look like the image to the right.

Which means people have to look for an answer to their question before asking it, something the guest "Malicer" obviously did not.
Telling someone who didn't search the forums to do so is actually helping, it's not giving a direct answer to the question, but it's pushing someone into the right direction.

Wrong.
It means exactly:
Quote:
so you can save yourself time for waiting for an answer, and you can save others time for them to retype an answer

It is an offered priviledge, not a forced duty.

Nor does in the qoute (of MGB) it reads anywhere any of you have the right to put him down for asking a question.
Meaning:
Quote:

Telling someone who didn't search the forums to do so is actually helping

In the way that you have done it, is wrong, again.
Telling someone (off) for not searching is not permitted.
Showing them to the search function and advising making use of, is a whole another deal and is most incouraged.
Read what MGB has said, he could have simply wrote one sentence "OMG STOP ASKING SAME QUESTIONS USE SEARCH STOP ASKING", he didn't, why is it articulated otherwise?

There is a vast distinction between belittling someone to actually helping him.
I was staff here long before any of this.
I didn't cry or scolded, I went, I researched, I came back with answers.
It is what this place is for, to teach, to solve problems.
People with knowledge to supply it to others who lack it.
Not for you to forcibly "educate" others on netiques and proper use of forum functions by making fun of them and "oh noes"ing around.

Exactly, you are given the priviledge of posting to assist people, which is (and I rephrase my earlier statement) what this forum is supposed to be about and what you are supposed to do with it (forum) and/or this priviledge at the non-trashtalk forums.
So then, if you don't wish to assist - simply do not bother to reply at all, as you obviously have no use for the priviledge at the aforementioned sections of the forums.

I do wish to assist, although for some questions I simply don't care about helping anymore.
That's something what would happen to everyone here, and I wouldn't make such a big deal from a few spam-posts after a frequently asked question. sa_tongue.gif

I do try to help most of the time, and sure, making non-helpful posts is "abusing" a privilege, but if it would be taken as serious as you do, I wouldn't even be here. sa_tongue.gif

I think I smell staff power for these last posts.

Users are supposed to do a search before the post a question. Helpers are supposed to help people that have less common problems. There are no guidelines beyond that, so let's not argue over what MGB meant.

Well MGB could make a table at the top of the forums that say please search before posting questions on this forum.. heh. Or something like that - obviously people will post their questions w/o reading the rules of posting, nor searching prior ahead.
EdTheInvincible - Mon Mar 07, 2005 12:58 pm
Post subject:
Or make the forum count the amount of time ppl spend searching and only let them post after they have searched for at least 5 minutes, so they hang themselves in frustration instead of posting here.
</sarcasm>

The current system is ok, if you don't want to answer, just ignore the thread. There are always going to be clueless people out there needing help with subspace, so why have a headache about it?
