This is the rig I will be building in about a month:

[CPU] http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115043
[CASE] http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133136
[PSU] http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153039
[VCARD] http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143128

Is the motherboard a good choice?

But now with the multi-core trend, these numbers don't mean much anymore... I'm guessing a good CPU is one that is efficient at making use of all its cores (or is that the motherboard's job?)

Also different microarchitectures are more efficient with instructions per clock cycle, so they'll have the same clock speed but higher throughput.
