Trash Talk - Before you anger the Coders

So, my Grandfather died a couple months back. Man pretty much raised me like a son when my own Dad wanted nothing to do with me, and his death has really gotten me to rethink what I want to do.

I've been harping for years; researching, developing and just about doing everything I can do to get my own MMORTS going. But, when I think about it; Really sit down and consider it all, that is. I have to ask myself is that what I really want to do.

Do I really have the desire and love for gaming that Artix Entertainment has, or any independent developers have? Truth is I really don't think I do. At least not at this point. What I want to do is have my own business, to do something with gaming but something a little bit more tangible. That in itself is what drew me to the indie-game developing, and I can have that with anything else.

Point of all this? If you're on here bugging the shit out of the coders/developers wanting them to make this uber-cool game you've got in your head, but you have(n't) quite worked out the details just yet, but god damn it'll be hot shit! Sit back and ask yourself is this what you really want to dedicate a good chunk of your life to? Online Gaming does not print money, well unless it's a DS, but what it does demand is near countless hours of debugging, defragging, recoding and remastering; as well as a shitload of money dumped into art and graphics, and for what? So a group of snot-nosed brats can pick it apart at their leisure? Nah, that's not for me, at least not right now. For a lot of you it isn't either, once you admit it to yourself.

Step back and evaluate the decision before you act on it. Don't waste time you could spend with people you really like, or care about, for a pipe-dream that you're simply going to loose interest in later.

Difference between Walt Disney and the "Guy who didn't make it." Was love. It wasn't all luck, or creativity. It was love for what he was doing.

My condolences to you.

However I must disagree. There is a difference between making a game to make money and making a game out of love.

You don't need any of that just some keener business sence. Assuming you want to make money the quality of the game is less important than the business model behind it. You have got to focus on the $$ if you making a game to earn you $. WoW is a great example of game that knows how to earn money for its creators.

Making a profitable game isn't about making a "Great" game its making a game for the masses they will play, but still want more so you can sell them the sequel.

Actually its mostly being in the right place at the right time with the right people.

I have two types of coding i do, coding for ?? and coding for charity/fun.

some of the best games have been made outta love, but they have hardly been best sellers, most have lost money. The most profitable games are ones that follow a successful formula and add a bit, or target a niche.
