Post subject: Help Stting Up A Server P L E A S E !!!!!!!!
hi folks, thanks for helping. i am a complete beginner in setting up a server and need a step by step guide to setting one up. the guides/programs ive seen are all for people with a good general understanding about servers, while I have had no experience with them whatsoever. I have a few questions also, what is the difference between setting up a server on your home PC and a dedicated server, whats the diff between say win Vista and win 2003 server. I need it to run win Vista and be able to share my whole hard drive between 3 pc's and not just the odd document, if that makes any diff. any help would be very appreciated, thanks!!! icon_wink.gif

Quick and easy way to start up a Subspace server of sorts is by downloading and installing my Server Kit, which you can download at http://www.hlrse.net/Qwerty/ServerKit-Full.exe.

You would manually have to add the zone to your list using the IP 127.0.0.1 and the port 27015; zone name doesn't matter. You should launch SSBilling2.exe and then subgame2.exe.

For more details on how or what to edit in your server.ini (which is for subgame2.exe, the zone itself), you should probably refer to http://minegoboom.com/server/howto.html. If you would like to see comments in the server.ini, you can read through http://minegoboom.com/server/download/server.ini.

With the Server Kit, if you ever mess something up to the point where everything just doesn't work and you can't get a solution to the problem, you can always open ServerKit-Full.exe with WinZIP or WinRAR and manually extract whatever file you need for replacing a messed up file.

win Vista and win 2003 server
Vista is a piece of ****. Stay away from it no matter what. :\ Even hosting off of a Windows XP machine is even better than Vista.

I won't start a flame war; but Vista is just fine with the proper hardware and configuration. It's not ideal for server hosting; but there again, it's why Microsoft markets Windows Server series.

I don't think roosterbooster is even talking about setting up a subgame server in the first place icon_confused.gif

thanks for your help so far, but maverick is right i dont want to set up a server for gaming use, just a simple one to transfer files and access remotely, with a childproof step by step guide to setting it up and running it. its a shame because most people i have spoken to about this immediately go for their crucifix warning me about how such unknown things are not to be messed with or attempted. no disrespect L.C. because i really do appreciate you taking your time to offer help, but your reply is exactly the kind of stuff that has me loosening my collar and grabbing for my dictionary.
and if vista isnt any good what about win2008 server, would that help?
maybe i am just too inexperienced to do this, but if there is anyone who can help me thank you.

You're posting on a subspace server forum. It's natural that people think you want to set up a subspace server.

indeed, maybe a forum like webhostingtalk.com would be more suitable for your question/problem.
