Post subject: Audio Routing
as it currently stands i listen to music a lot as well as talk on vent and chat programs. what i want to be able to do though is route my audio sources to my speakers and my headphones. i have my speakers plugged into the line out(surround sound) source on my motherboard, and i have my headphones plugged into the headphone source on the motherboard. I am looking for software that will help me route specific programs to use each of those sources (ie, vent through my headphones, and music through my speakers) any idea's? i'm not even sure what this would be called so its kind of hard to do a google search. thanks!

I've never heard of anything like that, but I would think if you were using winamp, you could find a plugin to change the output mixer to lineout.

Seems to be a silly way to do it, to me. How about a Winamp plugin to reduce the volume of the music it's playing when you're sending or receiving in Vent? I don't think one exists, though.

I didn't even know you could use speakers and headphones at the same time. On my computer, if you put headphones in either of the headphone slots(either the one in the case which connects to the soundcard directly, or to the headphone slot on the speakers themselves), it cuts off the speakers. It's done on a hardware level, too, so there's not a way to change that through software. Does your computer let you run music through both outputs at once? If not, then you won't be able to split program outputs between the two, so I'd check that first.

is there a way to check both outputs at once? reason i brought this up is i saw a software program a few weeks ago that let you route audio through specfic slots on your computer but i cant for the life of me remember what it is. i've heard of it being done as well, but i just cant find the direct evidence because i dont really know what its called.

Almost everything is like that. My cell phone, my laptop, and my mp4 player. Anytime you put metal into the slot, it mutes the external speakers. It's definitely hardware. They might make a special sound card that allows multiple outputs. Maybe if you have more than one soundcard (not on the motherboard). You might be able to select it that way with winamp like Doc said.

Putting it into the headphone jack would mute the speaker port, but not necessarily the line-out port (which is what he said he was using).
