Hello everyone,

I have a couple of questions about the Darwin Streaming Server and was hoping someone here could help me.

First off, I have successfully installed DSS on a mac os x and am able to view the movies on another computer by typing in http://1.2.3.4/mymovie.mov in a browser. (where 1.2.3.4 is the mac's IP address)

My questions are:
1) Is it possible to mask or hide the IP address from the client? In other words, can I set it up so that the client types in http://servername/mymovie.mov instead of the IP address?

2) How do I set it up so that I can remotely transfer files to the mac? I have tried SSHing and FTPing to the IP address, but this does not work. Can you point me to a guide on how to do this?

Thanks everyone. I am completely new when it comes to servers so any help you can give would be appreciated.

You'd be VERY lucky if someone happens to be able to help you out...

To MGB: shouldn't there be a README topic or something in the announcments? I see alot of these kind of posts from people who googled "server forum" and got here...
Also, why is the 'announcments' sub-forum filled with all the trashed threads... seems a little out of place to me :S

Question 1

DNS

Hostnames resolve to IP addresses by using a system called DNS (Domain Name System).

This system can keep IP/hostname information for a number of domains.

For example, when you typed in "http://www.google.com/" (which is, most likely, how you got here) your browser asked your DNS server "what's the IP address for www.google.com?".
A possible reply is 72.14.207.99.
Your browser will connect to that IP and ask for the requested page.

All DNS servers need to be managed and to be able to use a DNS for your own systems, you will have to give these systems records in a DNS.

A simple solution: using a "shortcut", hosts file

Now, because you may not own a domain or simply want to add a static entry... Like, you want call your router, which is on 192.168.1.1, "peanutbutter" so you can reach it by typing http://peanutbutter/, you'll have to add a static entry on the computers you want this for.

Adding an entry to the system's host file will prevent the computer from using the DNS servers but instead just use the IP address in the hosts file.

For Mac OS X the hosts file is at /private/etc/hosts.
For Windows XP the hosts file is at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.

Just add an entry like

Code: Show/Hide

1.2.3.4 servername
192.168.1.1 peanutbutter

save the file and try to load http://servername/ .

A pain in the ass: getting your own DNS server

Bind9 is one I think. There's not really a point in trying this because you'd be better off using the first simple solution.

Question 2

Meh, my Macbook Pro's coming in next week. I never really use my current Mac, I even had to connect a keyboard for you.
Can't you just use Network file sharing features? They're compatible with all other protocols out there.
Just enable AppleTalk in the Network configs.

In the system preferences window you can also find a component named Sharing, under Internet and network.
Enable FTP access there. Easy enough.

My OSX's Dutch, components might have other names in your install, I just translated these.

All these things should be pretty easy. Just look around a bit.

No one would read the readme topic, as is hinting by the fact that people post questions in the wrong forums, and even posting the wrong topics at together. I have successfully lower my Google ranking, as I used to be in the top twenty in dealing with generic server-related questions, now I'm only in the top 50.

As for the trashed topics, they don't really fit anywhere else, and no one reads announcements so that is a good spot for it. You know where it would be if you want to find it, but it is out of the way. I have the announcement forum also not show new icons on the index for new replies, so you never really notice when there is new junk added.
