Post subject: Win98 IE & DirectX Updates
I need some kind of link. It looks like Microsoft sites require latest update of IE and it shows only tiny links. I have Win98.

Microsoft websites will allow Win98 to view them, but won't give you full functionality for certain features and programs because they no longer support that OS (as seen in Windows Live).

What you need is either Internet Explorer 6, or Firefox 2.0 & up. They fully work, and I use them on my Windows 98SE computer and have never run into major problems.

DirectX, you can update it until DirectX 9.0c, but not DirectX10. Just visit Microsoft's website.

Windows update works, but many updates aren't considered critical, because they were primarily designed for better OS'. If it doesn't break, don't fix it - seems to be microsoft's motive. But with constantly updating technology, you have no choice but to keep up, even on older OS'. It's a lot easier doing the updates manually though.

(but I've never tried Doc's suggestion)

Or just upgrade to a worthwhile version of Windows...

Cyan, that's almost as annoying as BD telling people to switch to Linux. Almost.

98? reliable? lol?
When I had that it crashed at least once a day... And no my computer wasn't full of spyware crap, everything was at its place...
With XP, I can probably count on my hands the time it crashed in all these years...

Once you install the autopatcher you'd be surpirsed how reliable win98 is. mircosoft choose not to fix a number of issues with 98 and IE6 that made it crash and lock up... Its not crashed for me once so far except when i installed a wrong version of a NTFS driver (my fault not windows in this case)

That said windows XP is the better operating system, if i had the choice of 98 or xp i would choose xp everytime. However between ME and 98, 98 wins it. I only keep windows 98 around to play all my old games that don't run on xp icon_smile.gif

Well, I'm sorry but 98 is seriously lacking compared to 2000, 2000.1, or Vista. No security, more unreliable, far less administrative features, crap task manager, crap filesystem, very ungainly folder layout, and the list goes on and on and on and onnnnn.

But whatever, don't stop believing.

Though I disagree with you on the security/reliability of 98, that doesn't change the fact that XP/Vista is lacking in *all* those things you listed compared to Linux.

I'm not talking about the OS. I'm talking about you disregarding someone's question and instead telling them to switch, which is annoying.

I've used 98SE for the longest time, I don't hate it, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Fact is, unless you have a really good computer to start off with, most 98 computers just had about ~1.7gb on drive C:\. So to keep up in the modern world is almost impossible, because you have to suffer with limited drive space (which on my computer ended up crashing every so often due to "out of memory".
And unless you kept upgrading things, your graphics card, audio, etc. are certainly out of date, and won't work with modern games or programs. You'll also run into a lot of compatibility problems with external software. And your computer's performance will be far slower than other OS'.

Not only has microsoft discontinued it, they've also purposely rigged a lot of things so people would be more likely to get a better OS such as XP.
It may also lack security, but at the time it was fine, and now seriously who really cares much about hacking 98?

But I could equally rant on about Windows XP, and more recently Windows Vista. Reliable? I've found none of these perfectly reliable, though Vista is my top pick at the moment. (don't go all anti-Vista on me, because I know)

if you use the autopatcher it contains many unoffical fixes which stops all the crashing problems. It also adds some nice enhancements like network icons and the taskmanager. That said i would never let my windows 98 box on the internet it would get hacked to quick, it was designed in a time when network secuity was less of a problem and everyone trusted each other, and after all what damange can you do on 28k modems icon_smile.gif

lol the problem is the games i'm running in windows 98 are already running in ms-dos compatibility mode, they are dos games not windows games which is why they don't work with xp. Dos-box doesn't work with all games yet either. icon_smile.gif

Sometimes people are using the wrong tool for a job, and if this person asks me how to use their tool better, I'll tell them to use a different tool. Maybe it's a personality flaw, but I'm sticking to it. This is the same reason I give my reply that Cerium hates about writing MERV plugins... switch to ASSS.
