Well I wasn't even writing to the disk so I think it's just part of the USB2.0 "detection" process.

Personally, I think that's pretty much messed up.
I doubt any n*x detects USB2 drives this way.
As a cheap solution, can't you try to get a handle to this event and pause the file transfer during this crazy "detection process"?
Otherwise, I'd just try getting it on USB2.

I've been getting new hardware found and device not recognized messages for the past few days now. The HD still seems to be working though.
