Post subject: Disabling win xp usb 2.0 nag screen

Does anyone know how to disable the nag screen that keeps popping up on USB devices? It says something like "this device can perform faster". I don't care if it's running at full speed or not, but I do care if it disconnects and reconnects the drive, which ends up corrupting any files I am writing to it (despite using NTFS journaling file system).

As a side note either all my USB2 ports are internal headers on the motherboard or I just haven't got enough voltage to power my peripherals (only once did I see my card reader as USB2 in the add/remove devices thing).

I don't think it's working

The message doesn't appear but the device still disconnects and reconnects, you can see the icon in the systray disappear for a moment and the windows sounds play.

Smong, I can't really test this (I only have one single USB1 box somewhere in the attic), but I was wondering...
Why are you writing to it constantly? I mean, do you start writing to it as soon as the USB drive is inserted?
I thought it'd only cry and say "This device can perform faster" within one minute after it was connected or after Windows was loaded.

I'd test both USB1 and USB2 hubs, powered, and unpowered to see if that gives any better results.

But I'm still wondering, why are you writing to the drive during the disconnect? I hope Windows doesn't disconnect the drive after something like a day, I'd expect it to disconnect and reconnect within one minute after connecting.

I think it's switching drivers when it disconnects and reconnects.

I checked event viewer and there's a bunch of delayed write failures (ID 50) and failure to flush data (ID 57). Around the time it happens. There's also paging errors on "\Device\Harddisk2\D" (ID 51), I'm not sure what the D means there since the USB drive is not the D: drive.

What I'm trying to do is download large files to the external hard disk. These downloads take a long time and usually cut out half way due to the drive reconnecting. It also corrupts the download since I've tried wget -c (continue) and the final file is corrupted.

I've tried disabling power management for the USB Root Hubs in Device Manager but it still does it (even after rebooting). I've also got System Restore off on that drive. I also found a website that talked about MaxTransferLength, I checked it using the tool there and it's on 64k, which is supposed to be ok.

I think I'll turn USB error notification back on and see if the "faster speed" thing matches the error events. I suspect it does since the nag bubble always appeared at different random times.

Everytime the nag bubble appears I get event ID 57:

Well I wasn't even writing to the disk so I think it's just part of the USB2.0 "detection" process.

Personally, I think that's pretty much messed up.
I doubt any n*x detects USB2 drives this way.

As a cheap solution, can't you try to get a handle to this event and pause the file transfer during this crazy "detection process"?

Otherwise, I'd just try getting it on USB2.

I've been getting new hardware found and device not recognized messages for the past few days now. The HD still seems to be working though.
