Trash Talk - School sucks with Databases

Post subject: School sucks with Databases
We paid $20 at the beginning of the years for me to be able to check my grades at home. The database goes offline a lot (sometimes as long as a week) before they fix it. I go there and I see that they have coding errors on their page (you know the white page saying there is an error on line w/e). Once that is fixed there is usually a connection error or a different kind of error.

Code: Show/Hide

Connection Error

An error has occurred while attempting to access the STI Home data for the School/District at the IP: 216.109.0.10.

Error Description: -9100000000

Other possible causes for this error are:

    * The District server is temporarily unavailable.
    * An internet connection is unavailable between the STI Home website and the District database.

Please try again later.  If this problem persists, please contact your school or district for instructions.

This happens every week. I know what I have right now, but other people really want to see their grades. Why can't a school system handle a database? They use that MSSQL shit too.

Nothing tech-wise ever gets done. Is this just in Alabama or is it around you guys too?

I want a refund icon_sad.gif

MSSQL works fine for use at work our entire office runs off it, your school must have some newbs running it.

Also when they decided to call it STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection), what were they thinking....

There is this crippled retarded guy who fixes the computers at the preschool. He has to tell other people what to do and where to put things. He told my mom she was running a porn server off her computer when she had all of these viruses and things. A porn server isn't too useful on dialup (now upgraded to cable).

I bet the county board uses the same person. They have no idea what they are doing. Why don't they leave things alone. The code seemed to work fine for everyone. They don't work on weekends either. Lazy.

(Waits until tuesday for the database to maybe come back online)

STI Home shows us our grades, homework, schedule, and all kind of things.

I wish it included lunch money. Some schools have that.

I'm not entirely sure that this thread has a point. A point beyond the obvious of trying to make BD look good, that is.

You're very pretty yourself, Brain.

my school uses blackboard.very shitty, considering 30000+ students access it a multiple times a day.

My school has about 1,200 students. Less than half have STI Home. I would think somewhere around 300 students use it.

ROFL I have that too... it wouldn't be that bad, except there's too many different ways to configure things like where you're going to store assignments, so each teacher has things in wildly different places... shoot, I had the same teacher for two separate classes, and he had assignments under "Course Documents" in one, and under "Assignments" in the other class... and the drop box moved, too....

Generally any web system setup by an educational facility I've ever used has sucked.

Around summer of last year, I realized that someone skilled in such areas could probably make a lot of money writing a really solid online class software package. There definitely isn't a standard yet(Blackboard is the closest I've seen, maybe Regent, but that's a whole company), and there aren't any really good ones, either. Too bad I suck at programming. icon_sad.gif

An error occurred on the server when processing the URL. Please contact the system administrator.

Was up Monday after being down from about Thursday until late Sunday night.
So far it seems to have a record of being down about 75% of the time. They don't even tell you who the system admin is. It's most likely someone down at the board. I want to e-slap who ever it is. I'm gonna find their email.

In Database classes the most common example we have is a school registry system. It's not like nobody has ever thought of that ani, and if you think creating a database for schools will be that easy to market or lucrative, think again lol.

My school's DB works great btw.

Erm, I didn't just mean a database....

School registry, WebAssign, WebCT, whatever. It still applies. icon_smile.gif

I love WebAssign, but it's not my school's "official" web system, so hardly any teachers use it. WebCT sucks.

If you don't mind me asking, where do you go Muskrat?

Mines the same way, they use WebCT officially, but the coolest teachers use WebAssign.

I'll tell you... elsewhere. icon_wink.gif
