Trash Talk - Documentation Collection

Pretty much I took Catid's page and narrowed it down to documents. Does anybody have any kind of document not included on this page or Catid's page (both the same as of right now) that I could include into this? It would be nice to have a whole collection of various documentaries for Subspace, Continuum, etc.

How about you add the stuff to the Wiki instead of just collecting all the various documents with their various informations?

Because then an individual can access/download/mirror them all at once without having to search relentlessly through Wiki articles. It's such a waste of time.

If I just gave a coder a link to the Wiki, they would be like: wtf?

If I gave a link to http://www.hlrse.net/subspace, they would not ask any questions for a while, because they have all the information they need for understanding the basics and more right in from of them. It's far more readily available, straight to the point, on demand, and much more simpler than a Wiki.

Where as individual files, you can't search them until you have them download already. Each has their own advantages. I believe what he was suggesting was that you also place some of the documentation up on the Wiki. Like what you are doing now, having it in two places at onces gives it a better chance that the people who need to find it, can.

One bad thing about Wikis is that it's made for absolutely massive amounts of data, so they don't bother adding any features you might want in the areas of, say, reading the entire thing. However, in MGB's wiki, all AS3 documents are put in the "ASSS Documents" category. Just make a Biller category, and put everything in there?

Animate, Special:Allpages?

Anyway, I don't actually see any advantage to this method here. If you just put all these articles on the Wiki then put them in a category (like Animate was hinting at), it would pretty much be exactly the same.

The advantage is that is more ethical and cleaner to have a straight to the point page with direct access to copies of different documents related to protocol, file formatting, Subspace code, etc. It just does not feel right to look at it through that Wiki. I feel more comfortable looking at Catid's page than a Wiki page.

Instead of just giving someone a link to some Wiki that could use some organization, cleaning (washing), and a better theme, it might be just easier to direct a programmer to a page that hits the targets on the spots (bulls eye).

Those Wiki pages stress me out more than Catid's simple page does. I like his style over the ugly Wiki. If I hired a programmer who had nothing to do with Subspace, I think the chances of this programmer having a quicker understanding to how all this works would be far quicker than a Wiki page. It isn't crammed and cluttered with so many useless colors/tables/cells/boxes/etc. It is rather difficult for me to accurately portray to you why making a page with specifically documents, than to store it on Wiki (well, I'm fine if it is stored in a Wiki database, even a category of its own, but it would be far more organized and cleaner than a Wiki).

Anyway, whenever I have time I'll be adding a few documents to that page.

Will you consider linking to specific articles on the wiki as if they were documents? Here's one on physics to get you started:

Also why not link to the faq's on shanky.com/server? There are some interesting things in there.

This makes no sense. A loose collection of documents on various websites with different layouts is more organized than the Wiki?

Cyan, yes. The wiki has no structure to it, so it's impossible to find anything. You just blindly stumble around until you hit on a topic that only slightly helps.

Search and the main page work great for me. Not sure what I want, that top menu bar on the front for QuickLinks works great to just browse around without knowledge of wikis.

The idea behind a Wiki isn't just a collection of documents, it is a collect of documents that users can edit and add to. Not enough information about something, but you figured it out anyways, add to it.

I've used it a few times in the past week, and didn't find what I was looking for after the first 3 searches. Eventually, I tried searching for pages that might link to it, and got there that way. Maybe I'm just unlucky or don't know how to search a wiki, but either way, it doesn't work well as far as I'm concerned.

My goal was to find a setting, not to rewrite the organizational hierarchy of the wiki.

Just wondering why you are naming the page catid and using his details. Since you added documents that weren't written by him or being credited to anyone else. It looks like you are trying to pass off everything on that page as either catid's work or "catid approved". Sure you can keep the layout, but I would prefer it if you renamed the URL and removed the stuff in the top right.

Mine saying what your search string(s) were? Can help optimize the search engine a bit if I know what was wrong.

I was looking for DisableFastShooting, but didn't know what it was called. I thought it contained the string FastBomb, and therefore couldn't find it in ?quickfix.

So I looked for "settings", hoping to get the big list of them, but the only thing I got was a page of perhaps 20 settings. I had to enter a setting I knew in the search box to find the page. BombThrust, I think it was.

I'd done a similar thing a few days earlier, looking for BanG commands, but I don't remember search strings. I don't think I ever found what I was looking for.

Searching for settings returns with the complete settings page as the first result.

That one is a valid case. The BanG commands never got transfered over to the wiki. If someone doesn't throw one up by tomorrow when I get the free time, I'll add it in there.

You're right, my search string must have been different. I can't remember what it was, but it didn't work.
