When you are using cont .38 and going in a zone that needs .39, you get that pop up update thing. Now i was thinking, would it be possible to edit the code for that so it could let it download zone files (maps, lvz, ect) so the download wont be so long for zones that have a big download size? Granted this is all assuming that the update was server-side, if it is client-side then nevermind.

i'm speaking out of my ass here, but i think it's hardcoded to download an update.exe, but what's stopping a malicious update.exe?

Doesn't mapnewsdl mean mapnewsdl. I would think the speed would be about the same, and people would wonder why the progress bar is stuck for a long time while trying to download 0.39.

Also I think someone should make a static update.exe, one that has a link in global.conf so you can link them, without any viruses or whatever being transferred unless you click it yourself.

I've already made a post like this when I made a custom update.exe.

Well you would get the dialog with the hard coded message "a new client version is available". If you click yes to download you would just go round in circles, if you click no, it would still download zone files the usual way.

I think the new version dialog appears before you get news.txt, so no one would really know what order to press the buttons in. Basically good idea, but kinda useless. A better idea would be to make a prelauncher program, change your cont shortcut to the prelauncher, which would check for zone updates, then launch cont. This could even be done intelligently by having the prelauncher check for specially formatted URLs in the zones description (it would read zones.dat).
