Is there any way to test a custom built zone by playing against computer controlled ships??

Try this:
Subspace Offline
After install, you can change the map.lvl file and fight against some enemies
But you can't change settings I think

Though AI Bots aren't that great. The optimal way to test is definitely with friends.
