I went from MERVBot, to TWCore, to ASSS.
ASSS is really cool. There are a few tutorials flying around. What languages do you know?

I personally find TWCore easiest to use once you get the hang of how stuff is set up. (I wrote some pretty kickin tutorials too!)

MERV is probably the quickest to pick up because you just have to look through the file for where to put your couple lines of code, but I didn't really have much of an understanding of what was going on when I did MERV back in the day.

Summary:
If you know Java, go for TWCore (use D1st0rt's TWCore tutorials)
If you know C++, go for Mervbot (use Underlord's tutorial)

Don't forget you probably also need an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) to aid in your development;
for Java I recommend Eclipse (free to use), for C++ I recommend MS Visual Studio 6 (get it illegal).

Or you could not be a complete retard and instead use legal software for legal purposes. Visual C++ Express is being offer by Microsoft for free.

CatId's website has been moved to http://catid.sscontinuum.com/ .
However, a number of bot sites also provide Catid's latest Mervbot release. (like mine sa_tongue.gif)
