Ugh. It is a temporary name. Instead of going around saying 2003 UB313 all the time, the people who found it gave it a nickname until its status can be defined. Yes, being the nerds they are, they gave it a nickname after a TV character because it did 'fit' the theme as it may be.
But now, Ceres kicks ass. Charon isn't doing too bad, but the wacky rules for it will also make our own moon a double planet in about four million years.

The chemical element Cerium (atomic number 58 ) was discovered in 1803 by Berzelius and Klaproth, working independently. Berzelius named the element after the [Ceres] asteroid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1_Ceres#Namesakes).

Last I heard the name Xena was just a "placeholder" until they found something better, then again they might have made it permenant.
