You want to convert to phpbb? Umm, I'd really recommend against it. PHPBB is horribly coded, full of bugs, and comes with nothing good. The only reason I use it, was because back in 2002, it was the best free forums software.

Read this guide to selecting forum software for reasons why certain forum software is better than others.

Oh, to convert FROM smf...um, I know Invision will do it for a price, but I'm sure someone has released a converstion application. Check the popular invision sites like ipsbeyond and invisionize. As far as phpbb, well, it sucks, don't bother.

smf used to be dbz's old forum software. it was very slow indeed, and the UI looked pretty crap.

SMF is alright, but it's admin functionality is subpar compared to Invision. Same goes for phpbb.

vBulletin is clearly the best forum at the moment. Invision is a horrible piece of trash, I can't believe people use it. phpBB3 will take over the world like 2.0 did in 2002.

Im sure you can find a free vbulletin somewhere. Or just pay for it, its probably your best bet.

vBulletin and Invision are both great forum applications. Both are highly customizeable and have plenty of modifications available. What it comes down to is personal preference, which one you personally like better.

I used to use snitz, which isn't on that list, I don't even know if they still have it up, but I liked it for a good starter forum (it wasn't that great though). I still prefer PhpBB (mostly because I like the GUI and I've started to learn Php, so I can customize it a bit), even though some one can hack it, but hey look at MGBFs, not very many people have tried.

I'd say otherwise. These forums are targets of phpbb hacks about every fifteen minutes. Be it spam bots or bots attempting to abuse security holes, these forums get tons of attempts.

If I were to start fresh now, I'd pick PunBB. And seriously, MGF? Mine Go Forums? Ugh. Just call it Server Help forums.

EDIT: Sorry, for some reason I keep saying "MGF", I guess it's just because I just type 'f' and click on the recent sites, to come here (sometimes I miss the click, and go to fuckedcompany.com, by mistake...).

Almost every one gets the term mixed up, because of today's media.

A hacker is someone, that is a developer, that does his part in a online community, and is respected for his work or help.

A cracker is a lazy person, that "cracks" in to computer and/or servers, stealing valuable data, destroying it, or doing harm.
