FYI... a lot of you probably heard about the bill recently that involved prioritizing bandwidth on the internet... I admittedly don't know a ton about the issue, but if I remember right, the bill got shot down. But the government went ahead with another plan... and here is one of the results. Verizon Wireless, as of the 15th of July, has turned up a new service in several cities known as the Wireless Priority Service. Here's one of their official statements:

Wireless Priority Service - Update

As of 7/15/2006, more markets will launch for WPS (see below). Wireless Priority Service is a wireless network solution that will allow Verizon Wireless the ability to assign priority levels to certain government and industry subscribers who have been preauthorized by the National Communication System (NCS) division of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The markets that will be launched on July 15th launch are:
*Louisville, KY *Phoenix, AZ *Seattle,WA *Memphis, TN
*Buffalo, NY *Santa Clara, CA

Of course, Verizon Wireless is a privately owned company and the government doesn't have to get a bill passed to influence them. VZW is really pushing their image as a reliable service even during disasters, and WPS is really just another corporate move, hoping it will make them look good... oh well, I doubt it will be any large problem, VZW hasn't shown anything but reliability in the past.

The internets basically screwed - goverments dont like the freedoms people have here and starting to tighten the screw and take control of it, wait and see you'll have the firewall like chinas in the US soon enough. give it a few years, the excuse will be terrorists of pedofiles, probabbly both.
