Does anyone know of a really good port scanner?

As I can only assume you plan on using this on computer systems in which you own, I'd go with the simple one. Shields UP by Steve Gibson (an official idiot) will do what you need. Run this on any browser on the computer system you wish to check.

If you need to check computers behind a firewall, read up on nmap. To run it under Windows would require an effort you wouldn't follow through with, so this option is pretty much void for you. Just stick with Shields UP.

K Thanks a lot MGB. The admin of technology in my school told me to see if I could find a good one.

Damn you MGB, don't tell him about NMap.
BTW, what does he need to do to get it to run then?

The commandline?
I think I still have the old zip archive with the front end in it. icon_smile.gif

I agree on Gibson being an idiot (which was my opinion even before I saw grcsucks.com). He acts like "I kno everytin!" with his self-promoting website.

The people who got me to that site were discussing the fact that he writes "all" his applications in ASM.
Have you ever seen what he "created"? The only respectful program is SpinRite (which isn't much either). The rest is just some lame and ugly GUI with two buttons (one for enabling/disabling a feature and the other one to exit).
I even downloaded his ASM 'example' once, I remember there was something in it like 'NOT TO BE IGNORANT OR ANYTHING BUT IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS YOU MIGHT AS WELL TURN YOUR COMPUTER OFF'.

Ah... there it is...

However .. having given you all this stuff for free, I do need to ask one
thing of you:

PLEASE DO NOT WRITE TO ME WITH QUESTIONS ABOUT ANY OF THIS

I'M HARD AT WORK WRITING A HUGE INTERNET SERVER "THING" -- IN ASSEMBLER OF
COURSE -- UNDER WinNT AND I CAN'T PROVIDE TECHNICAL SUPPORT FOR THESE FILES.
MY INTENTION IS JUST TO GIVE EXISTING ASSEMBLY PROGRAMMERS A HEAD START.

I *REALLY* DON'T WANT TO COME OFF LIKE AN SOME SNOBBY ASSHOLE (YOU PROBABLY
ALREADY KNOW THAT I'M NOT ONE) BUT ... FRANKLY ... IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO
USE THESE FILES THEN YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE.

Best luck with this head start!

Steve Gibson.

Haha what a loser. icon_biggrin.gif A huge INTERNET SERVER "THING"!

Netstat?

On famatech's d/l page you will find in the bottom free tools for download.
There's a decent port scanner there, among others.
