At random times my mouse stops working, and sometimes the keyboard too. When this happens I reboot (from start menu) and get a horrible beeping noise as it starts up, so I wiggle the mouse connector and press the reset button.

Once pressing keys on the keyboard (after the mouse died) made the mouse jump to the corners, and another time moving the mouse made key presses (I was playing CS at the time and moving the mouse had the effect of walking instead of aiming).

Either the mouse and keyboard are both dying simultaneously, or the connector/motherboard is wearing out. Should I get a new motherboard, computer or just buy a usb mouse and keyboard instead of ps2?

Something that may or may not be related. If I unplug my computer from the mains for at least 5 minutes, and then plug it back in the psu makes a faint hissing noise and I can't turn on my pc for a few minutes.

I'd say the motherboard is broked. USB keyboard+mouse might fix the problem, but the motherboard IS broken.

Wow, two computers in my house have these same problems (one each).

As Brain said, definitely the motherboard. I'd recommend getting a new one (you never know what else might be broken...)

The power supply, the family computer has had that problem for years. Doesn't do any damage, so just don't unplug your computer I guess.
