General Questions - Sound formatting just right for Continuum... Quan Chi2 - Sat Oct 15, 2005 9:50 am Post subject: Sound formatting just right for Continuum...
The zone I'm making requires that I change the sounds to add to the zones theme. I understand that the default sounds are in a wa2 format(Im guessing the same as a wav file but Im not sure.). There are going to be many replaced graphics; all if not many. I don't want the download to be too much for the user so I want the sounds to be small in size. I was wondering what sound format I could replace the default sound files with that Continuum can recognize. I'm hoping that I can replace them with compressed sound files like mp3. Thanks.[/quote]

I'm not 100% sure, but I think Continuum can only read wa2 files.

Only WAV (wa2) files. You can use a compressor like Audio Recorder Pro to do this.

Wav isn't compressed though.

Yes, it is. You can compress it to a lower quality (measured in hertz), which'll lower its filesize.

Which will also lower the quality.

I hope that the quality doesnt sound so.. noticable..

Depends how low you compress it...

Don't need no fancy sound compressor.
The default windows sound recorder would do just fine.
The format you want to go in, AFAIR, the highest one supported by SubSpace is PCM 11.025kHz 8bit mono.
It might not look like much, but the sound quality is rather formidable.
FYI:
There is no WA2, WA2 files are WAV format.
It's just a specific different extension name which signals the VIE client to use this file instead of the default WAV by the same filename located inside the resource.dll.
Being a SS clone, Continuum originaly drawn base gfx/sfx from the resource file, while allowing gfx/sfx replacements support the same way VIE did (via wa2/bm2 files).
However, since the last upgrade (or couple few), the continuum client no longer has a default graphics/sounds pack resource and simply load all its needed gfx/sfx from the appropriate folders.
In his silly lazyness, priit didn't bother to change continuum to load up bmp/wav files and left it to load bm2/wa2 files (it may support wav/bmp, I don't know, I base this educated guess on the fact that continuum comes with or that zones d/l to you replacement extension files and not pure ones).
So, whatever files you place there as it stands are with the replacement extension and not the real extension.
Go figure.

Continuum supports WAV, BMP, PNG, GIF, JPG.
Quan Chi2 - Sat Oct 15, 2005 5:43 pm Post subject:
what about avi files?
Purge - Sat Oct 15, 2005 6:09 pm Post subject:
No. Cyan just said all that Continuum supports.

Although that's not a static list since Continuum hopefully uses LoadImage(), a function which can support a number of formats.

Yeah, imagine Continuum supporting .tga.
