LVZ/LVL Questions - Which is better? Anonymous - Fri Sep 30, 2005 5:22 pm Post subject: Which is better?
Is it better to have lots of SMALL IMAGES for a lvz map to cover a area or a few LARGE images?
Purge - Fri Sep 30, 2005 5:24 pm Post subject:
It depends on the actual filesize of each of those images...

Is it better to have the client process alot of SMALLER images (problem on slower computers) or have it downloading a few LARGER images (problem on dial up users) ?
Conclusion; define "better"

Ignore my top post; I thought he meant big as in its filesize. Cyan~Fire - Fri Sep 30, 2005 11:15 pm Post subject:
It's almost always better to have large images. Downloading is just a one-time event.

Graphics cards are usually more efficient when images are powers of 2. I did some testing for an arena idea I had an found that when filling up a large area (bigger than the screen), 128x128, 256x256, or 512x125 works best.

I'm surprised 512x125 worked well. Anonymous - Sat Oct 01, 2005 10:43 am Post subject:
So basicaly small images are worse than big images when it comes to playing?
Mr Ekted - Sat Oct 01, 2005 11:14 am Post subject:
Well, I've been in zones where the images were just sized as big as the objects. In some cases over 1024x1024. When these objects were on screen, FPS went WAAAAAY down.

So I have 2 images of same type: one is 256 by 256 and the other 1278x1278; should i use the 256 or the 1278?
Mr Ekted - Sat Oct 01, 2005 11:52 am Post subject:
Huh? If they are different sizes, then they are different images, right? Or is the large one just a tiling of the small one? If so, definitely use the small one. If not, cut up the large one into 256x256 chunks.

Yeah the 1278 one is a tiled version of 256; so your saying use use the small one instead of big one? I thought that would increase FPS
Mr Ekted - Sat Oct 01, 2005 12:06 pm Post subject:
It will. That is a good thing.

Basically, lots of small images on screen is evil, and really big images on screen are evil.
Anonymous - Sun Oct 02, 2005 10:27 am Post subject:
But which is less evil than the other Dr Brain - Sun Oct 02, 2005 11:17 am Post subject:
Small images. They take less time to download.
