How many megs are in a gig? I'm debating on setting up a personal website, and yeah.. I just need to know.

Kilo = 1000
Mega = 1000 * 1000
Giga = 1000 * 1000 * 1000
Tera = 1000 * 1000 * 1000 * 1000

BUT

In computers, those thousands are really 1024.

So a gigabyte is 1024 megabytes.

in memory (RAM) a gig is 2^30 bytes which is a little over 1 billion bytes while a meg is 2^20 byes which is a little over 1 million bytes. the ratio (2^30 / 2^20) is 2^10 or 1024 megabytes per gigabyte

in disk (harddrive) the companies got cheap and realized that they could advertise that they have more disk space if they defined a K as a thousand bytes(instead of 2^10), a meg as a million bytes(instead of 2^20) and a gig as a billion bytes(instead of 2^30)... so on disk a gigabyte is exactly 1,000 megabytes.

You were both right depending on the context.

Hard Drive companies don't make the operating systems that report file sizes.

So, on disk, a gigabyte is exactly how large the OS thinks it is. That means 1024 megabytes.

we had to do some studying in computer science about that kind of thing, apparently some older computers used 7 bits as a byte

Octal is useful in representing 9 or 6 bit bytes.

Because 8 is 2^3, octal is useful in representing any set of bits that are a multiple of 3. That's why Hex is used to represent 8 bit numbers, because 16 is 2^4 and 4 devides evenly into 8.

We want numbers whos placevalue can immediatly tell you what byte they represent, and octal placevalues fit between the byte boundaries when the byte is composed of a multiple of 3 bits.

Bah... I used to think words were defined by how they were used, but I guess you're right Cyan~Fire... who cares if I'm buying a 50 gigabyte harddrive and want to know how much memory i'm actually getting?

Which is why when you put it in the computer, it says have 49 GB (actually, you get less because of file system overhead, but that's not the point).

You're absolutly correct about the HD people marketing with 1000 rather than 1024, but once it's actually inside the computer, it's all 2^10.
