ONLINE SCANNERS

www.bitdefender.com
www.antivirus.com
www.pandasoftware.com

Depending on your operating system, some will work better than others and some wont work at all. They all require internet explorer. You can almost always tell if you have a virus; your computer will slow down or you will notice something unusual. Become familiar with the usual process that run on your computer and clean up as much adware and unneeded programs as possable. Dont open attachments from email unless they are sent through hotmail or some other company that scans the email. Only download porn on kazaa, downloading programs becomes risky. Have a firewall, a router one would probably be best but a software firewall will work nicely too. Update your computer on www.windowsupdate.com and keep up to date. Download and use firefox and possably another email client. I personally dont like thunderbird but there are others that are nice. AVG's antivirus scanner is limited, it really doesnt do that good of a job but it will detect them. Ive used it to clean up virus ridden computers and it just wasnt getting the job done. But I guess you get what you pay for.

Aside from what you might download on purpose, your biggest threats are Internet Explorer and Outlook. Do not use either, ever, except Internet Explorer for Windows Update and ONLY for that purpose.

When you aren't using Internet Explorer for Windows Update, you should have it set to its highest security.

Tools > Internet Options > Security - High

I read AVG only detects ~60% of viruses.

Hmm I do all of this stuff. Except I don't download porn from Shareaza I download programs (got some good ones this way).

My Friend told me about www.Pcpitstop.com. I dunno just doesn't work the way I want to I will try out some of 50%s (I don't like the IE part though IE on my comp gets an assload of adaware) and probably Avast.

My tip is to never use a P2P service other than BitTorrent. If you're the illegal type guy, might as well check out isoHunt to download all your programs and stuff. sa_tongue.gif

Not all filesharing. BitTorrent has the most users than any other P2P which is why I suggested it. And besides, BitTorrent is actually LEGAL. sa_tongue.gif
Cyan~Fire - Wed Dec 08, 2004 10:43 pm
Post subject:
Acutally, all filesharing services are legal. The legality depends on their use.

Uh, you can't ask BitTorrent for an opinion, you can google for user opinions.
He asked for good virus protection software, not for a way to download one.

A question had come up to me when I was giving a "seminar" er "speech" icon_wink.gif on the Internet and WWW. I basically told them, if i were to write a p2p application, I shouldn't be held liable for what the user's do with it.

As someone brought up the point, it'd be like sueing Xerox for allowing people to copy copyrighted material; etc. ..

They (MPAA/TV/I don't remember) tried to stop Sony from making a VCR, because they said it would be used for only illegal purposes. Try as they might, they failed, but not after large legal battles.

P2P will end up having the same fate, but the problem is that legal battles arn't cheap. Thus, the MPAA/RIAA can easily just threaten small P2P companies, and their choices are to shutdown and pay them $20,000 or to fight it and maybe win, but end up costing them $100,000+.

"The Supreme Court agreed Friday to consider whether two Internet file-sharing services may be held responsible for their customers' online swapping of copyrighted songs and movies. Justices will review a lower ruling in favor of Grokster Ltd. and StreamCast Networks Inc., which came as a blow to recording companies and movie studios seeking to stop the illegal distribution of their works." Grokster won in the lower courts, but the studios are appealing. This case, when finally decided, will be equivalent to the Betamax case 20 years ago which ensured that VCRs were legal.

Oh gosh... now the Supreme Court is going to hear it...

Ya Betamax pissed the movie people off bigtime, but you can't fuck with Sony. sa_tongue.gif

Anyways, nowadays they make more cash on video rentals and sales than in-theater profits. Stupid hoes.

I sure hope there are some trusty geeks out there advising the Justices that essentially visting a website is a P2P action... etc. :/

Eh that reminds me to the classmate who got kicked out of my other school's "media center" (some room with like 30 computers and a bunch of books / desks) for "downloading" (well, that's what one of those jobless observers called it).

We complained to her and said that browsing to a webpage is downloading (partially) too.
Too bad she didn't understand and he still had to leave. icon_sad.gif

Um, he also said that he downloads his other files off Shareaza, which is a P2P service I suggested him not to use. I didn't say get BitTorrent to download a Virus Scanner.
