Post subject: re: Linux / Windows dual boot
Just looking for some thoughts on dual booting Linux & Windows from people that have tried it (or thought about it and came up with a good reason against it, etc).

I'd prefer just straight up Linux (Gentoo, if you're curious sa_tongue.gif), but I have to admit that I probably would like to play ss every once in a blue moon. I'm also a wannabe soon-to-be wannabe programmer that'd like to ripoff popular Windows programs that don't have good free, open source Linux(etc)-compatible counterparts.

From what I've read it's still a pain in the ass to emulate (or install, even) Windows inside Linux (lemme know if I'm off)...especially Continuum, heh.

So, dual boot - good idea? Bad idea? Waste of time? Yadda yadda.

If you're for dual boot (and I decide to do it), I'll be wanting a good stripped-down Windows solution, too.

I'm planning on getting another comp soonish so I can probably just do solid Gentoo on that and use this old one as a dualboot whore, but that's no reason not to have a good thread going about it. sa_tongue.gif

I've done it with Mandrake, Redhat, and/or Lindows with XP before. Didn't have any problems or anything... just got a little annoying when I booted up always having to pick which os I wanted.

I think for now I'll just do Linux - I have a lot going on now anyways, will be good to have one less distraction. Another computer with Windows close by anyways.

When I get my new comp I'll turn this one into a multibeast.

Well. If you are not thinking of running any services, Dual-booting should work fine for you.

Works decent.

If you do decide to dual boot make the windows partition only a few gb, you don't want to wait ages for scandisk and defrag (I thought 25gb was a good idea at the time...).
Also I didn't like the idea of messing with the MBR, I saw no docs on how to restore it so I use a boot floppy with a 5 second timeout defaulting to linux.

Exactly which windows programs did you want to clone? I think it will be hard for you as you say you have little programming experience. I want to see something like MSPaint for linux, I got xpaint but I don't like how the toolbars work.

fixmbr under the recovery console works great. Grub is a good bootloader.
