Post subject: Perl or C?
I was planning on learning C recently and then moving onto C++ when i got done with that. I am looking at the "for dummies" book series at www.dummies.com and I see Perl under programming, i was wondering if anyone could tell me the benefits and disadvantadges of each. I am running windows if that helps somehwere somehow. and if u could say what doesnt work on linux too thatd be gr8.

Finally, I'm done sigh'ing after reading your post.

Are you sure you have the right to say "when i got done with that"?

Please don't get Qndre style, if you know what I mean.

Depends what you want to do. Perl is for quickie scripting. You won't find any serious app written in perl. In fact, almost every app you can buy in the store/online was written in C or C++, with a small number in VB.

Perl is also a scripting language; I used to mess around with it for my web-scripts; but it's kinda been outdated to PHP.

PHP is good for websites, but perl is still king for any command line scripts that deal a lot with text. Perl's strong suit is manipulating text. The language is setup so there are at least 50 different ways to do anything.

I'd say if you want to learn a lot about regex and text manipulating, learn Perl. If you want to do a lot with numbers, or any type of game, continue with C. If you like to learn a bit about regex without learning another language, try out Regex Coach.

Right; as that was the original intent for Perl. It's a hefty language; and something that's good to know.

Meh, I thought it sounded like "YEAH I'LL LEARN C WITHIN A FEW MINUTES, THEN I DRINK SOME COFFEE AND THEN I'LL LEARN SOME C++ OR SOMETHING". icon_biggrin.gif
