Post subject: Improving Low FPS
Hey,

I am having a horrible time with my FPS (Frames Per Second) in this game. In zones I play I get as low as 15, and sometimes under 10. This just plain out ruins the game. My FPS changes in whatever map I go to. For example, when I play on an empty blank elim map, my FPS may go up to 100. But when i go to a duel arena with all safe zone in the center, I will have under 10 FPS. Basically the more tiles / background, the worse it is for me. Whats even more strange is that sometimes after I restart my computer, my FPS will be decent for around 5 minutes and then go to crap again. AND, if i turn off Trillian & Winamp, my FPS will go up a little as well. Its very strange...

Any suggestions would be great. I've tried changing my color depth to every option, doesn't work. I've tried overclocking my gfx card, however my particular graphic card doesnt react to well when I over clock it.

-----System Specs-----
P4 1.5 Ghz
512 MB RAM
100+ GB HD
ATI 9600 SE Graphics Card (The SE is the worst edition, but I am trying to make the best out of it)
----------------------------

Thanks,
Surfy

Don't run WinAmp while playing; it's a system hog. Make sure you are using 8-bit color, and play full-screen, not windowed. Use the smallest resolution you can stand, say 1024x768. Turn off 3d sound, background, stars, bomb/bullet/shrap/ball trails.

Yeah I can see how turning off background would help, however, I usually play MG in which the background is in the .lvz ... so I dont know how i could get rid of it...

If it's set optional on the server, you can do Options/Other and uncheck "Use Optional Level Graphics and Sound".

On an old system here I could get the FPS to a higher level using
"No FrameRate Limit" and "Disable Clipping" checked in (from the client's main window) View -> Advanced Options.

I think I needed "Avoid Page FLipping" to be checked too, got weird results when I did that on this system, not sure.
Anyway, if you haven't tried that yet, you should now.

No.

Do you have the latest DirectX version and display drivers installed?

Is your monitor refresh rate set properly (read: high enough)?

You could always try debugging graphics by going back into Advanced Options and enabling software emulation and forcing various graphics elements into memory. Try messing with graphics acceleration in the Advanced section of your Display Panel.

If all else fails, start killing processes with the Alt+Ctrl+Del (Task Manager if you're on XP). See if one of them is hogging display resources.

Don't be surprised if none of this works, since I'm kinda just pulling things out of midair.

I got some more FPS when I started using subtle energy bar.
BTW I'm having trouble killing this process that is like 99-100% called 'idle process' or something?

You're kidding, right? I don't know why it's there, but it basically just is Windows doing its old little loop. There's no way to kill it other than shutting down. icon_razz.gif

Cable. It's enough for low-pop zones.
