Found this thread at neowin.com
I thought it's interesting.

http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=182983

The author of this thread linked to a zip file which contains 593 viruses.
Now everyone is testing out their AV.

"How good is your antivirus?"

When I scan the file, my McAfee says this file is infected, but I don't know how many viruses were actually found...

What AV do you use, and what does it say? icon_smile.gif

this test doesn't mean much

It's obvious the archive wasn't assembled by a professional, so each file might contain more than one virus or no virus at all - or non-Windows viruses. Also, without a full list of the viruses it's supposed to contain, we can't know if each AV is doing a perfect job or not, because all AV's do it differently. Just because it says it detected less than expected doesn't mean your computer is at risk - just because it detected more than expected doesn't mean your computer is safe.

Anyways, here's my screenie from my old AV.

McAfee VirusScan v4.5.1 SP1:

Didn't mean it that way icon_sad.gif

I guess I'm the only one who is really exited playing around with a zip file containing 594 viruses.

you're not going to find a single AV out there that gets the exact number 594, so don't be sad - this is an extremely unprofessional way of doing it

Agreed.

@ed: That's 98.8%, which is pretty good.

I think virus scanners should use better heuristics, using huge lists of virus 'definitions' is rediculous.
And since when could NAV successly disinfect a file?

this I assure you - you ARE getting viruses

one day your computer is just going to stop working and you'll either have to get a good AntiVirus program and let it spend 4 days straight cleaning your computer or you'll have to just reformat

there are good free AVs - check download.com

One of the easiest ways of getting a virus is to open the email titled 'Postmaster failed delivery - Re: You've won some cash money' from address 'youaresogullible@some.government.url' with an attachment named 'winninglotterynumbers.doc.exe' in outlook express (not that I've done that of course).

my friend picked up an email at the school computers talking about how he has been to a bunch of illegal sites and to open the attachment to view the list. thank god the school has good firewall protection because the virus scan came back saying it was a virus. But I used to (and still do) have Norton Internet Security 2004. I got it for free off Amazon.com with rebates. But it was too protective and it slowed down the internet. So now I don't care if I get a virus I will just install the virus checker then uninstall it again. Problem Solved
