sysop.txt is only necessary if you have CheckSysop=1 in the [Validation] section of your server.ini (that being said, it is a very good idea to set CheckMod, CheckSmod and CheckSysop to =1)

now, as for getting your powers

you need to know the sysop password for your zone

it is specified after SysopPassword= of the [Password] section of your server.ini

now you know what your sysop password is (or now you remember sa_tongue.gif) but you still don't have powers

you either need to type *yourSysopPassword in-game EVERY TIME you want to use your powers

OR

append *yourSysopPassword to your normal password in your profile

(it is a good idea to make a new profile specifically for the zone you have powers in if you choose this second method, as a profile with an appended staff password in it will likely be unusable in any other zones)

-------

?owner is something else

what is displayed when a user types ?owner is merely the value for the setting Name= of the [Owner] section in the .cfg (settings) file for whatever arena that user is in

IT DOES NOT MEAN THE PERSON HAS ACCESS TO SETTINGS

You can set it to virtually whatever you like (alphanumeric plz) - you can set it to "HOLY MONKEY MAN" if you want.

What gives access to settings is the setting UserId= in the [Owner] section of the .cfg file

you can find out your own userid by typing ?userid in-game

you can find out someone else's userid (if you have the appropriate powers) by private messaging them *einfo

userid= only works in zones or subarenas where u have non-sysop powers.
i'm quite sure this is right presuming i had no power in a zone (wasnt sysop/smod/mod) but complete control over a subarena's settings and map

yes, sysop powers generally override most everything else
