A router is a device that connects your network of computers to the internet and provides some measures of security. If you are on dialup, or are the only computer in your house then you do not have one. If you are the only computer on that broadband internet connection, then you probably dont have one. If you dont even know, its very unlikely that you have one.
If you are at school, or work or something like that, then you most definately are behind one.

A router will never work unless you drop the firewall and open the desired port then it will work.

Lol knight, routers always work, just not with SS servers.
And btw, you cannot 'drop' the router's firewall. The way a router works makes it a firewall, and if you tried to take away the firewall, it would just act like a hub, which kinda defeats the purpose.

Most people confuse what routers are. All one does is looks at the header of packets, and figures out where they are going. For home usage, many people instantly think of a router as a device that connects multiple computes to a single cable/dsl modem. They also believe that the 'firewall' that those home routers use are good firewalls.
What most routers you'll ever encounter that will cause you problems that you could fix will be ones that use NAT (Network Address Translation). They are the ones that let you connect many different computers all under the same IP. How it works, I will not get into much detail, but the low down on them is this: When you want to communicate with a server, you send a request out to them. Your router with NAT enabled will read off the header information of the packet, and notice that you'll be talking to them. So it changes the header around a bit, so that when the computer talks back, it will talk to the router instead. It adds in a little key, so when the router receives these packets back, it knows which computer on the LAN (Local Area Network) originally wanted it.
How this prevents servers from running on your system is that others in the world only know your IP (Internet Protocol) address, which is your router. So when a computer wants to connect to your server, they connect to your router. The router has no idea what to do with this random packet it got, so just ignores it.
What you need to do is tell your router that packets coming into a server port will be forwarded to your computer on the LAN. But each router is different in how you tell it to do such, which is where the problem comes from.

ty.but then y cant i download my zone when im running subbill and subgame2 and when click add custom my comes up green but its got 10 ping (yes,i have dial up and a 733 mhz processer)

its got 10ms because thats the rounded averge time from your system to itself.
Specifically whats wrong? If it simply wont let you connect even though its green, search around in these forums. This issue has been discussed many times.
