Post subject: True average bullet damage?
There is an answer to the question about calculating average bullet damage in Shanky's server help (FAQ section) but I don't think that the formula is correct because if you draw the function with graphing calculator or program you see that it really is a curve, not a straight line.

That's why, I think you'd need to calculate average other way than descriped. In my opinion the correct way to do so is integrating the function squareroot(x(n^2+1)) where 0<x<1 and n is the maxdamage. I figured out that average bullet damage would be (2/3)*squareroot(n^2+1). Rough pen and paper version of how I ended up with that can be found at http://koti.mbnet.fi/liito/avg_bullet_damage.png .

What do you think?

Yes, I did that FAQ question about 5 years or so ago, back when I only knew algerbra. Intergrating is the right way to do it. I might update it sometime or another. (Didn't check your math, but intergrating it is correct)

Ok great. The formula (2/3)*squareroot(n^2+1) is correct. I checked it with integrating tool of TI-86.

There's little error in the formula given there. Don't put 2/3 inside the square root or use square root((4/9)*(n^2+1)) formula since you'd need to square 2/3 before putting that inside the square root. icon_wink.gif
